The Special Reserve of the Bessa was established in 1985, the hordes of cobblestones, the various sedimented rocks and the multitude of plants and bushes, frame the most important gold mine of the Republican age.
The Bessa goldfield originated a million years ago out of the rich gold deposits transported by the expansion of the glaciers of the Aosta Valley. The rock carvings on the boulders in the area confirm the presence of man in the protohistoric period. In Roman times, the area was exploited for its gold deposits until their dissipation, when the golden period of the Bessa ended.
Today it is still possible to immerse yourself in the history of the place and admire the uniqueness of the landscape. The municipality of Zubiena is home to the Arena Victimula, a village of gold diggers in which, from time to time, the World Championship of Gold Seekers is held.
However, discovery of this wonderful area does not end here: a dense network of paths allows you to experience part of the nature reserve on foot, mountain-bike or horseback. Five of these Itineraries are marked and will guide you throughout the route.
